What I Wish I Knew Before Buying My First Home

September 17, 2026

In the spirit of transparency, let me tell you something. Before becoming a real estate agent, I was a nurse. I worked tirelessly during COVID, and that experience took a toll on me. I developed anxiety, and through it all, I was—and still am—the head of my household. When I bought my first home, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. No one educated me about the down payment assistance programs that may have been available to me. And the result? I spent thousands of dollars out of my own pocket to buy my first home. I received no down payment assistance. No closing cost assistance.

As the person responsible for providing for my family, walking away from that closing with almost nothing left in my bank account was a major financial hit. I remember thinking, There has to be a better way. That experience changed the way I look at homeownership. Today, one of my biggest goals as a Realtor is to educate homebuyers about the programs and resources available to them so they can make informed decisions and avoid some of the mistakes I made. I also spent years working on my own credit. So if you’re renting right now and think, “My credit isn’t good enough to buy a house,” I want you to know this: Credit repair is attainable. Your current credit score does not have to be your forever credit score. And credit should not automatically be the reason you believe homeownership isn’t possible.

Your obstacles don’t define you unless you let them. It’s time to take control of your finances, understand your options, work on your credit, and find out what you may actually qualify for. And please—don’t assume you have to drain your savings for a down payment. There are programs designed to help eligible buyers with down payment and/or closing costs, and you may qualify for assistance you didn’t even know existed. If you have questions about down payment assistance, credit, or the homebuying process, send me a message. And if you’re overwhelmed, don’t know where to start, or simply need someone to listen—I’m here. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
